One way to contribute to the ministries of First Baptist Church is by serving on a committee. There are a number of standing committees, so you can be sure to find one that fits your gifts and interests.
The Board of Deacons consists of the Senior Pastor and one deacon elected
for every twenty-five to fifty active members. The board has oversight of the
members and organizations inside the church and of relationships with other
churches and organizations outside the church. The board has supervision
over all legal and fiscal affairs of the church. The Board of Deacons shall
consider suggestions, recommendations, and grievances of any member or
organization of the church. All standing committees are under the supervision
of and are responsible to the board.
Overseeing, coordinating and promoting the educational ministries of the church are the responsibility of the Christian Ed Committee. They evaluate the quality and doctrinal soundness of educational materials. They approve, appoint, train and encourage workers and teachers.
This committee acts as the School Board of Downers Grove Christian School. It oversees the operations of the school and has its own budget.
The Deaconesses minister to other women through evangelism, counseling and discipleship. They have oversight of all women’s meetings. They are also responsible for the supplies and equipment used in communion and baptisms.
The Finance Committee has the responsibility of directing the financial program of the church and its organizations except the Downers Grove Christian School. It prepares a budget, solicits the financial support of the membership and supervises the disbursements of funds.
Members of this committee are responsible for the missionary outreach of the church and for promoting, organizing and coordinating all missionary activities. The congregation is encouraged to get personally involved in outreach programs through this committee.
This committee is responsible for assisting in the planning of the public worship services. Sometimes this committee also participates in overseeing worship arts such as holiday programs, skits, decorating, etc.
The Nominating Committee exists to put forth applicants from which vacancies on boards and committees will be filled. They try to match a member’s gifts and talents to the service opportunities available on various committees.
The Outreach Committee deals with introducing FBC to visitors and prospective members as well as overseeing public events designed to touch others with the love of Christ. Some of this committee’s duties include overseeing the FBC website, identifying, contacting and communicating with visitors, Christmas tract distribution, evangelistic movie nights, etc.
Party people can find a place on the Social Committee. This committee manages the provision and serving of food for social church-wide functions. It also provides and maintains the kitchen wares that are used in social events.
Trustees have jurisdiction over all real and personal property of the church. This includes physical needs in the church, its buildings, properties and other items requiring maintenance and upkeep or replacement.
